A Collaborative CAR On “Choice”: A Way To Improve Students’ Speaking And Writing Achievement For GEP 2 Students
My GEP 2 Class consisted of mixed ability students. Some of them were very
excellent, some of them were average and some of them needed extra effort in
understanding the lesson. When I set the standard activity it was achievable for all
the students but the excellent ones got bored and were not enthusiastic in the
class activities. And most of the students only used standard language components.
So I decided to give “choice” based on their interests. Giving “choice” means the
students free to choose the activity in the extension part based on their interests to
apply the lesson learned on that day. Pretest was conducted after the observation. On the pretest students studied the lesson with the activities prepared by the teacher and at the end they reached the teaching objective and do the extension part by doing the provided activities. On the following meeting teacher provided choice activity based on their interest in the extension part After applying this technique four times, the teacher gave them post test. The data was analyzed by comparing the result of pretest and post=tests by using designated band descriptor. The result shows that all of the students got significant improvement . The
average score of the pre-test is 36.54 while the average score of the post test is 4.1
Based on the questionnaire all of them enjoyed the choice activity in the extension part.
They also used more variations of the language components. In short, this technique is effective to enhance students’ achievement and build positive classroom atmosphere. Hopefully, it will inspire other teachers to give choice activity based on the students’ interests for the classroom activities
